This image, take from a postcard that was posted in 1904, shows the first city-bound electric tram service ready to leave Thurcaston Road on April 21st 1904 (although that date varies in different publications). What is interesting is that the person that wrote the card states that the tram got stuck, and that a man was crushed to death at the power station (located on Belgrave Road near the canal).
